Our Story, J-Tops BBQ Shop brings together the best of all great BBQ techniques to create something uniquely its own. The process begins with the best meats, seasoned with perfect spice blends and then smoked with 100% hardwood for many, many hours until the perfect harmony of smoke, flavor and tenderness emerges. Our food is steeped in tradition, but given new life. No matter what you grew up with good barbecue speaks for itself.

OUR STORY AND HISTORY

J-Top’s (formerly known as Charlie’s BBQ) was founded by Charlies in 2008.

8948 Cleveland Road has been a staple BBQ restaurant in the Cleveland area since 2008. After a full career as a state trooper, Charlie retired and started a second career serving BBQ to the community at Charlie’s BBQ and Grille. After 12 years, he turned the BBQ location over to J-TOP’s BBQ SHOP. John (J-TOP) took over the location after several years of private event catering.

John Thompson is a passionate barbecue eating expert.

“My passion for BBQ was instilled at a young age attending family cookouts and church BBQ plate fundraisers in and around Eastern NC – “JOCO”. It always seemed like I had a pig pickin’ or a plate sale to attend as a teenager. During college, I traveled to the southeastern United States while playing golf for UNCP.

During this time, I ate a lot of BBQ from every region we traveled. I learned to appreciate the different traditions, styles and flavor profiles. After a decade of mastering my passion of BBQ, I decided, with the love and encouragement of family and friends, it was time to spread the BBQ traditions I appreciate to others by smoking at the speed of ‘cue!”
